What the Democratic reformers urge in Pennsylvania politics
A Boston Herald editorial urges Democrats to seize the chance at the May state convention to challenge bossism and Don Cameron’s control in Pennsylvania. It argues independents and reform-minded Republicans must unite, nominating a fresh slate to defeat the machine, while criticizing Wolfe and party insiders for stagnation and spoils.

STATE v STANDARD. Back taxes sought from Standard Oil
In Hareispere on April 4 Judge Simonton filed a lengthy opinion in the commonwealth v Standard Oil Company case. The court holds the commonwealth entitled to recover over 333000 plus interest, with a judgment directed unless exceptions are filed. It holds Pennsylvania taxes on foreign capital and stock held in state corporations, with original claim of 3145000 reduced to 790000. The decision covers capital stock values, interest accruals, penalties, and related costs. Also noted are social column items on President Arthur's reception and Mrs Grant's attire. Governor Hoyt reportedly arranged a railroad-related posting for William Dowd's son at 6500 yearly, with Hoyt planning to move to New York.
