Baseball stars threaten to strike delaying the fifth game as 25,000 fans fill Fenway Park. After pressure, players agree to take the field while the commission insists no concessions will be granted.
Boston and Chicago opened the fifth World Series game amid a delay over receipts. After a government-backed settlement, the Cubs and Red Sox led by Hooper Wagner Mann and officials prepared to play to satisfy 25 600 fans. Players demanded receipts repartition and the commission set terms for winners and losers payments.
The rosters list Boston players Hooper Shean Strunk Whiteman Mechunis Scott Thomas Agnew Jones and umpire crew with O Day Hildebrand Klem Owens. Washington Sept 10 The draft will register men aged 32 to 36 in October and November. Younger 18 to 20 year olds not exempt will be sent to colleges on a selective list for a short period, but many 19 to 21 and 32 to 36 will soon be used for army needs. The 37 to 45 group would be called last, if at all.
Frank Charlton reports Allied advances across Picardy and Flanders driving deeper toward the Hindenburg line. British near Gouzeaucourt and French ground south of the Ailette face strong German counterattacks, while French forces push toward the Oise river and along the Crozat Canal. American lines stabilize on the Aisne as Fo ch widens flanking maneuvers to threaten Chemin Des Dames.
Paris reports Gen. Pershing awarded Albert S. Hartwell the Distinguished Service Cross for risking his life under heavy fire. Despite severe head and leg wounds, he carried a wounded private to a dressing station, illustrating heroism in combat conditions.
Belgian forces join with British French and American troops in a Sept 10 offensive, advancing about two miles over a 3 to 4 mile front. They capture Pilhelm and other fortified farms and cross roads northeast of Ypres, extending the Allied line toward the north sea and widening control around Ypres. One hundred forty German prisoners taken. operation marks a major move since Belgians entered swampy low ground last spring.
Washington reports a battle lasting about an hour in which a large oil tanker allegedly sunk a German submarine about 354 miles east of Sandy Hook. The tanker, attacked first, maneuvered to waste torpedoes, then guns reportedly scored a direct hit. Navy officials awaited full verification before releasing details.
London Sept 10 Field Marshal Haig in a special order of the day praises a month of British offensive success. He notes 75,000 German prisoners and 750 guns captured, states Allied armies advanced beyond 1917 lines, and commends all ranks for defense and bold attack. He thanks commanders, staff, and soldiers, expressing pride and hope the dark days will not return.

Autumn storms slowed operations but Allied progress continues. The work focuses on clearing pockets and stabilizing the line with troops optimistic the war may end next summer.
