Indications point to the opening World Series clash between Vaughn and Mays as the probable opposing pitchers for today’s game in Chicago. Managers expect strong pitching and early runs as the curtain rises on the season’s fall classic.
Chicago September 5 There is a bullish tone in the weather market as opening game of the World Series between the Cubs and Red Sox looms at Comiskey Park. Betting favors the Sox slightly with even money and some 6 to 5 bets. Dave Vaughn likely to start for the Cubs against Carl Mars in the opener.
London reports 75 German U boats sunk by British vessels in the year ending August 1918. The update notes record British naval tonnage near 1.9 billion, 1.5 million naval and merchant marine personnel, and total Allied manpower of about 8.5 million. It cites major troop transits to France, carrier shares for American troops, and extensive aid to France and Italy via British shipping.
Washington report states the new man power law will not draft inmates from state prisons federal pens or jails. Inmates aged 18 to 45 must register on Sept 12 with the war department and reports go to state adjutants, but not in consolidated state reports. Absentees include unconvicted prisoners and those in reformatories and insane asylums who will register via local boards.
National Committeeman A Mitchell Palmer denounces Senator Penrose as leader of the party while recounting a Sinnott claim that Eugene C Bonniwell conspired with liquor interests to enter as Democratic gubernatorial candidate. The 113-member committee heard arguments, voted to reconvene September 14, and elected J W H Rupp as chairman. The meeting adjourned amid dispute over Sinnott and Bonniwell accusations.
Overnight front updates report 4 American and French troops crossing the Vesle as German troops retreat toward the Aisne. Allied units on the Picardy front push toward Cambria to the east Canal Du Nord while German counterattacks north of the Cambrai Bapaume road are defeated. Lens evacuation confirmed but gas hinders full British occupation.
The National Committeeman for Pennsylvania recites a Pennsylvania liquor politics scheme involving Penrose Bonniwell and Sproul. Sinnott claims control of Bonniwell and describes a plan to secure a pro liquor Governor and safe districts for anti prohibition. He asserts 900000 letters were sent to mobilize support and funds for Bonniwell’s campaign, using Philadelphia Municipal Court letterheads.
London reports a British victory on the Flanders front with Ploegsteert taken and Hill No 63 seized. Over four days the British say they have captured about 16,800 prisoners and more than 100 guns as fighting rages near the Lys, Messines, Neuve Chapelle, and Cambrai sectors.
Paris dispatches say on September 5 the French made further progress across a wide front and repelled two major counterattacks. East of the Canal du Nord contact with the German lines was maintained while advances continued toward the Aisne. The Canal de la Somme was crossed and forces moved past Hombleux Esmery Hallon and Flavy le Meldeux reaching north of Guiscard and near Bertincourt.

American troops push from the Vesle to seize strategic high ground dominating the Aisne valley. German retreat broadens across 188 miles in five sectors as British and French advance near Lille Douai Cambrai. Allies report thousands captured and dozens of guns taken as Pershing notes patrols and a Lorraine raid repulsed.
Washington reports ten white selective service mechanical draftsmen for limited service to be mobilized at Camp Meade on Sept 18 assigned to the ordnance corps. In Angers France a American private Wilcox is killed and Sergeant Rawdon seriously wounded in a street battle with Apaches. Wilcox died of a heart stab and Rawdon was stabbed in the neck. the town held his funeral as citizens mourned the young soldier.
Amsterdam reports German Chancellor Von Hertling and Austrian Prime Minister Baron Trussarck will meet in Vienna or Berlin next week. The aim is a peace offensive, with Vienna possibly seeking mediation by Spain.
