President Wilson prepares reply as Lansing Baker Daniels and House weigh Germanys peace terms. Officials say only the President can speak while Swiss chargé delivers official text to Lansing, with Congress urging unconditional surrender and caution against trusting Germany.
On October 14, northwest of Verdun, German counter attacks against the American front were repulsed at all points after heavy artillery preparations. The fiercest assault targeted the left wing, with American artillery mowing down advancing troops in open order. The American line remained unpenetrated as rain fell and artillery dueling continued, with German shelling concentrated on Malamont wood.
United States public reaction to Germany s peace proposals centers on rejecting the German note and demanding unconditional surrender as President Wilson s response remains undetermined. Telegrams flood the White House and State Department with calls for action and repudiation of the German government while officials caution against expecting a straightforward reply. Duluth Minnesota October 14 forests fires in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin have killed more than a thousand and left about 40000 homeless with 15000 destitute. Fires abate but rescue teams report charred bodies along roads through devastated areas. Fourteen towns destroyed including Corina Thompson Arnold Moose Lake Kettle River Twig Rice Lake. Area burned about eighty by one hundred miles. Adjutant General Rhinow leads rescue and medical supply delivery.
British and Belgian troops push toward Courtrai while Belgians advance on Ghent near a German strongpoint. French troops aid as Laon and La Bassee region see operations, with Paris reporting Laon civilians freed and eastern advances. Pershing confirms American divisions aiding British and French frontline efforts with ongoing repulses of German counterattacks.
Mineola New York October 14 A private was fatally shot another seriously wounded and an officer shot through the arm by machine gun fire from an unidentified aeroplane over the Camp Mills drill ground today. The plane did not land and may have belonged to a nearby aviation field on a target practice flight.
Washington October 14 Turkey via the Spanish Embassy asks President Wilson to urge a general peace conference and accepts the President's January 8 program. The Turkish plea, delivered by the Turkish chargé d affaires in Madrid to Spain, then to the U.S. secretary of state, requests immediate steps toward a general armistice on land sea and air. Secretary Lansing offered no comment and noted the U.S. is not at war with Turkey. Officials warned the response depends on Allied positions.
London reports Hagland rejects armistice terms without full guarantees to bar Germany from renewing war. Britain doubts Prince Max as their spokesman for German democracy. Scheidemann tipped as replacement. Balfour and Lloyd George discuss peace while Bouar Law stays silent. Press voices mixed, Pall Mall Gazette calls Germany defeated.
