Reports from Harrisburg show broad compliance with the health commissioner's order mandating closure of all amusements across Pennsylvania to prevent further spread of the epidemic. Observers note many municipalities have acted in line with state directives.
Reports from Harrisburg and Washington show statewide closures of theatres, dance halls, pool rooms, saloons, and later all public gathering places to fight the Spanish influenza. Schools and churches largely stay open, with authorities warning of dangerous spread and urging precaution.
The Frash, six thousand ton freighter, sank after colliding with the U S 5 8 George C Henry ten thousand ton tanker eight miles southeast of Cape Sable. Forty one crew were rescued by the Henry as it aided survivors through the night. The Henry suffered a bow hole but remained afloat and reached port. Frash crew totaled 89 including 13 officers and 76 men.

Memphis Tennessee felt a light quake at 4:25 this morning with the tremor traveling northeast to southwest. Doors rattled and dishes loosened in rural homes, but Memphis reported no damage. No injuries or major destruction noted.
American airmen north west of Verdun outguessed a German ambush plan. They attacked dummy balloons and seven Fokkers, then launched a larger strike that downed four Fokkers and two balloons. Ace Eadie Rickenbacker and Lieut Coolidge are credited with enemy kills.
Washington Ort 4 A call for 20419 white and 980 colored select ive service men for general military service was led today by Provost Marshal General Crowder. Voluntary enlistments under the call will be allowed until October 12 and the men will be entrained October 15 for various institutions where they will receive a short course in mechanical training. Forty three states will contribute the white men and six states will supply the colored. The call does not affect the recent call for 142 000 which was cancelled because of the influenza epidemic. In Pennsylvania the white contingent will train at Pittsburg University 1500 men and Carnegie Institute of Technology 490, with 600 to Penn State College.
Allied forces push on multiple fronts as American units advance north of the Somme Py-Attigny highway and capture Mont Blanc and Medesh farm. British troops breach Hindenburg line gaps near Fresnay le Grand and press in Flanders and Picardy. Four thousand German prisoners are reported north of St Quentin as French moves continue near Rheims and Champagne.
