German forces fail to gain ground despite strong pressure in the Chevy area between the Ourcq and Marne rivers. They are repelled with heavy losses as they attempt another advance while Foch's reserve army blocks their path.
German efforts on the Aisne Marne front show renewed pressure but no ground gained in the past day as Gen Foch's reserve blocks Paris. Reports note a possible next blow in the Montdidier Noyon sector with Americans near Montdidier and large German reserves on the Soissons Rheims front.
The toll of American vessels sunk by German submarines rises to thirteen. The auxiliary schooner Samuel G Mengel was sunk by bombs 175 miles southeast of New York on Sunday and the schooner Desauss was torpedoed off the Delaware coast. A Danish steamer rescued eleven Mengel crew members from an open boat. Desauss crew fate unknown at press time.
Washington reports quote Secretary Daniels on keeping the sea lane to France open despite German submarines. Navy aims to ship men supplies and food to Allies. officials defend destroyer deployment and note probes into raiders. Coast insurance unaffected as U S destroyers counter subs off the Atlantic.
British war office reports continued German artillery activity north of the Scarpe and Lys, with Allied counterattacks repulsing assaults near Corcy south of the Corcy River and around Lens. A few prisoners were taken as raids near Lens and South Labassee Canal were checked.
Senator Sheppard of Texas announced the Randall amendment to make the nation bone dry during the war is dead after talks with President Wilson and Herbert Hoover. Hoover reportedly opposed the measure as unnecessary and unwise at the current time.
General Pershing reports minor American actions in Lorraine including a concrete observation post destruction and a clash where three Germans were killed. American forces in the Aisne Marine area launch a bold counterattack at Nuilly Wood near Chateau Thierry. Red Cross units assisted refugees and wounded along the Marne.
Washington reports 110 casualties in the American Expeditionary Forces. Forty seven wounded severely, thirty nine killed in action, thirteen died of wounds, six from disease, three by accident, and two missing in action. Officers suffer heavy losses.
Washington reports that six complete U S divisions are in the actiual combat zone in France, with many more in reserve. American participation in heavy fighting is possible, and at least one independent U S division was said to be engaged in yesterday's action.
On the Lorraine front American infantry attacked Monday morning forcing a German retreat of over a mile and capturing prisoners. A patrol in the Luneville sector fought a German patrol of 17. three enemy were killed. American patrols penetrated an observation post and blew it up amid heavy artillery and rising air activity.
A general strike at Chicago stock yards tied up hog trading as 509 to 600 workers walked out after an executive session. Workers seek 40 cents an hour, time and a half for overtime, and an eight hour day, with potential broader impacts if unresolved.
President Wilson moved again to spare Tom Mooney from execution. He sent renewed telegrams to Governor Stevens of California and dispatched a commission headed by Secretary of Labor Wilson to review the case, citing doubts about a fair trial and seeking clemency to prevent miscarriages of justice.
Washington plans final arrangements for summoning 200000 selective service men with Crowder signaling the call will be issued tomorrow. Movement to camp starts June 24 with every state except Arizona to provide men. A separate 40000 colored selective service volunteers will be sent to camp June 20 to 24.
Maurice Francis Egan United States minister to Denmark has resigned due to ill health. The resignation was accepted by the President, but a successor has not yet been appointed.
One hundred persons killed and fifty injured in an explosion at an ammunition factory near Marseilles on Monday. The accident occurred at Beauszeng.
Washington June 5 A million more young Americans today signed the nation's honor roll by registering for military service. Early reports say 21 year olds registered since last June 5. expected to reach 10 percent of 1,000,066 with about 750,000 available for duty to back Pershing's forces in France.
London reports the Times commends American soldiers for brilliant action at the Marne Bridge during a heavy bombardment with smoke screens. Germans attempting to cross were destroyed by explosives and some prisoners were taken as the Express praises the gallantry of the Americans in the praise headed We are coming Father Abraham man, a million strong.
Washington June 5. Seaman Carl A. Brandt of Evanston Illinois risked his life by jumping into the Loire River in France on April 17 to save a 13 year old messenger boy who had fallen in. He was commended by the Secretary of the Navy for his bravery.
Evidence of a plot to smuggle the Russian crown jewels and other royal heirlooms into the United States was unearthed in New York with the arrest of Vladimir Jogelsen of Russia and M. G. Kahn of New York.
Oakdale June 5. Mr and Mrs W M Vanderbilt Sr offer the Idle Hour estate to the American Red Cross to serve as a convalescent hospital for soldiers. The property could accommodate about 1500 patients.

Hundreds of refugees are seen fleeing with scant possessions as US forces press the German advance.
Six train men died and four others were injured in a head-on crash between a mixed train and a wrecking engine inside a tunnel under North Avenue in Burlington Vermont. A misread order triggered the collision. sixty passengers aboard the train faced a panic though none were hurt. All deaths occurred among crew on the engines.
