In Boston on January 16 two unidentified men suffocated after being trapped by flames on the top floor of a South End lodging house. Several lodgers and Mrs Delia Lea the landlady leaped to the street from windows as smoke and fire spread through the building.
War Department reports Captain Samuel H Hodgson US Army medical corps was dismissed after a court martial found he praised Germans, mocked the Kaiser, and urged attacks on the United States or Mexico. He claimed German spies admired Mexican work and referenced friends among Germans before his dismissal and two years hard labor were commuted to dismissal with a reprimand by President Wilson.
