Rescue operations began early today to remove injured men from the stranded Northern Pacific. Weather remains cold but seas are calmer than earlier, and good progress is reported as crews work to evacuate the wounded.
Wounded soldiers from the Northern Pacific were lowered in baskets from the stranded transport and hauled aboard a hospital ship Solace and destroyers. Coast guards in surf boats ferried 2,000 troops from Hoboken to ships offshore as weather and sea conditions improved slightly. The Northern Pacific requested a Sandy Hook fire boat and lighter craft to remove baggage and wounded.
London dispatch reports President Wilson planning a second European tour in 1919. He would sail from Brest around February 15 to return for the completion of peace talks in mid June after finishing duties in Washington.
Three American Expeditionary Forces combat divisions totaling 83,000 men and officers are assigned to sail back to the United States on the first available transports, signaling a shift toward demobilization as orders continue to wind down overseas duties.

Boston January 4. Frank Pacheco known as Young Frankie Britt was freed of all blame in Roxbury district court for the death of opponent Terry McGovern of Philadelphia who died after a boxing bout. Judge Hayden discharged Britt after Police Captain Gord said no further evidence could be offered.
Jan 4 report states Senator J Hamilton Lewis of Illinois charged that the real reason for action on the cables during the armistice was the cable companies refusing to give casualty lists priority. He said a forthcoming official document to Congress will show the government’s control of wires but not dictate message order and that a settlement with the Postal Company may delay the report.

Cleveland Jan. 4 More than 200 contractors from across the country who had informal verbal contracts for war material with the government formed an organization to push for early settlement of their claims. The treasury ruled that without formal contracts the claims are invalid. They will urge passage of the Dent bill legalizing these contracts. W. S. Symington of the Remington-Chicago Corporation was elected president.
Representative Royal C. Johnson of South Dakota denied a report that wounded soldiers were mistreated aboard the ship returning from overseas. He urged an investigation into alleged mistreatment of soldiers at Camp Merritt, New Jersey, upon arrival there, in a telegram to Representative Julius Kahn read to the House Military Affairs Committee.

He said the big packers threatened to quit patronizing railroads unless they ensured perfect service.

In Cleveland on January 4 Florence Schultz of Denis city and Lieut Hallock Rouse from Superior wed the next day after meeting at six and getting engaged at ten. Rouse, on furlough from an aviation camp in Waco Texas, met the 17 year old bride to be at a hotel party and announced plans to marry. The couple married at three the following afternoon amid wartime romance reports.

Washington, Jan 4 The House military affairs committee voted to report favorably a bill allowing American soldiers in France and the United States to enlist in the regular army voluntarily. It would repeal current emergency enlistment rules and restore prewar terms. Secretary Baker warned Congress the department might lack an army in France without changes to the emergency clause.
Copenhagen report says Norway will sue Germany for wartime shipping losses from mines and submarines. The claimed loss amounts to 1,000,000,000 kroner. Norwegian authorities note the krone’s value at about 26 cents in U.S. money.
Kearny New Jersey January 4 Fire swept the greater part of the Swift and Company plant on the meadows near here. Firemen battled flames amid water shortages. The plant is valued at 106000 dollars.
