New York December 21 shipmates recount how Scotland Yard almost drafted baseball manager Jack Hendricks aboard the Megantic. A deputy questioned him about a man with the same name and age, but Hendricks passport and likeness cleared him. Shipmates note his relief when released.

The Rivers and Harbors Appropriation Bill for 1919 20 fiscal year authorizes preliminary expenditures of 8.06 million dollars, rising to 24 million, with a total 26,936,344 dollars for existing projects and new starts. Major items include Delaware and Chesapeake Canal at 3 million, Sturgeon Bay Lake Michigan canal 3.3 million, Calumet Harbor 38,170, and Livingston Canal Detroit River 750,000 to grow to 1 million.
In Quincy Massachusetts Mrs Florence Stanton Kalk christened the United States destroyer Kalk in memory of her son Lieutenant Stanton Kalk the only officer to die when the destroyer Jacob Jones was torpedoed last December Mrs Kalk’s father General T H Stanton joined Lincoln’s volunteers in the Civil War and her husband Lieutenant Frank G Kalk died in a railroad accident leaving her alone.
Canadian airman Captain W. G. Claxton believed dead after being shot down turns up alive in Germany. He had shot down 27 enemy aircraft before capture. Other pilots reappear alive after reports of death include Eddie Rickenbacker and James Norman Hall. Squadron claims defend Quentin Roosevelt’s fate amid rumors of desertion.
New York December 21 1939 thirty seven American officers and three majors and two colonels arrived from France today aboard the transport Metapan. The Baltic with nearly two thousand enlisted men was expected to reach port late afternoon. Also listed is the George Washington slated to arrive on Christmas carrying the 139th Field Artillery under President Wilson’s voyage to Europe.

Copenhagen reports a British fleet began bombardment of Bolshevik forces at Reval on December 24. Bolsheviks retreated to the Wesenburg line as a Spanish fleet occupied the Baltic coast in Russia.
Washington December 21 Acting Secretary of State Polk will be summoned to testify before the Senate foreign relations committee early next year to explain any objections by the department to a clear statement of American policy toward Russia. The committee deferred action on Senator Knox's resolution until Polk is heard, with sentiment favoring adoption but members awaiting State Department input. Knox asked for two weeks delay to allow more deliberation. The resolution urges postponing debate on the league of nations and sea law until after the peace treaty is signed.
London reports the peerages conferred on Fred Marshal Hair and five other British generals will not be made public until New Years Day. Parliament is expected to vote momentary rewards, following the King’s traditional New Year announcements. Washington notes the failed New York to Chicago air mail attempt leads the Post Office to suspend the route until January 2.
Russell E Sarvis 22, veteran of the great war and scarred by twenty shrapnel wounds, visits his Ontario brother Lewis Sarvis in Strafford. He left Canada April 1915 with the Fighting Eighteenth, fought at Mes sines Kemmell Hill and Dickebusch, wounded in October 1916, home October 9. His father and Lew is also cited as relatives in France with the 23rd Headquarters Company.
Washington, Dec 21 Senator Cabot Lodge of Massachusetts delivered a forceful critique of President Wilson and the peace treaty with Germany. He opposed adding a league of nations to the German peace terms, warned of delays, questioned secrecy, and urged harmony with allies while defending a strong navy and the occupation of Germany until indemnities are paid. He raised doubts about who would join the league, voting rules, and American commitments in future diplomacy.
The National War Labor Board ruled New York on December 21 that wartime labor contracts remain valid for the duration of the war. Taft presided with B M Manley as co chairman, noting the Supreme Court holds peace ends only when Congress ratifies a peace treaty.
