An Atlantic Port report says a British freighter battled a German submarine for nearly three hours about 45 miles off Fire Island. The freighter, noted for exceptional speed, sheltered behind a larger steamship believed to be a mother ship to U boats while a chase toward the American coast ended with the submarine giving up four miles astern.
Unconfirmed reports at Newark waterfront claim the Ward line steamer Morro Castle en route from a southern port to an Atlantic port has been sunk by a German submarine. Ward Line officials dismissed rumors, noting no official information and citing private cables about the ship’s arrival at a Cuban port.
American bridgehead north of the Vesle comes under intensified German artillery with the Prussian guard division nearby. Observers note barbed wire defences forming and new positions being built as airmen photograph enemy lines. American air power claims three German planes down and reports valuable captured artillery used against German forces.

A Copenhagen telegraph dispatch says heavy cannonading lasting two hours was heard off the Skagerrak on Monday morning. Later many warships were seen with guns in action farther south. The Skagerrak lies between Denmark and Norway and the report may refer to a clash off the west Frisian coast involving British forces and German aircraft.
A Moscow dispatch says 50,000 Soviet troops clash with about 100,000 Czecho-Slavs near Sembirsk along the Mid Volga. The battle is described as raging with heavy forces involved on both sides.
Washington announces a call for all men aged 21 between June 5 and August 24 to register on August 24. Registration hours run 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at local boards with about 150000 men expected to register and many will be deemed fit for military service. A later date will be set for Alaska Hawaii and Porto Rico. Inter Allied Munitions Council Opens in Paris detailing intensified output and standardization with Col Winston Churchill to represent England.
General March reports that troops of the Forty-Second Rainbow Division and the Third Regulars endured heavy losses during the July 30 combat in the Qureq passage. He notes brave action by the units and emphasizes the arduous conditions faced by soldiers.
Gen. Peyton C. March announces the 131st Infantry of the 33rd Division captured three officers and 150 men and seven 105 mm guns at Chapilly. He notes the German counter attack near Fismes, Americans holding the town, and that Germans are fifty miles from Paris. He urges dropping Sammies in favor of Yanks and cites praise from British and French commanders.
