Allied forces report net gains as 40000 prisoners and 700 guns captured amid a wide offensive. Survivors of U boat ruthlessness land safely as the fourth day finds the enemy entrenched along a twenty mile front. Tremendous losses and delaying reverses prompt fresh heavy bombardment and defensive rallies.
Allied gains press toward Roye amid German counterattacks along the Albert to Oise sector. German losses mount with 40,000 prisoners and up to 700 guns reported as British French forces advance and chase retreating units.
British forces report progress on the Picardy front with Armancourt and Tilloy captured and advances toward Roye. French dispatch notes heavy shelling around Marquivillers and Merivilliers with no front changes between the Avre and Oise rivers.
Special to the Times reports a fatal wreck near Trunkeyville when a southbound freight collided with a light engine on the siding. Flagman R. F. Newbower of Oil City died as debris blocked tracks. London reports British naval forces supported by aircraft were attacked by German planes while reconnoitering off the Frisian coast on Sunday. A German raider on the Atlantic flank may have sunk additional vessels beyond reported losses. Authorities say fifty to sixty ships were in the vicinity where the raider operated, suggesting a broader impact than confirmed.
Multiple U boat attacks off the Atlantic coast report sinks of two steamers and several fishing schooners. The Syland and Wien are named among vessels sunk. crews rescued without loss of life reported so far. A German officer boasted of sinking a schooner named Millen, amid bombings of others.

Paris reports that 64 Austrian deserters were executed, a dispatch from Vienna to Zurich states. The stark count reflects severe military discipline amid wartime conditions.
