White Pine Forests of Idaho Face Blister Rust Threat

Idaho's vast white pine forest, the world's largest in the Northern Idaho, is threatened by the white pine blister rust. The disease travels from currant and gooseberry plants to pines, spreading via windborne dust that later infects bushes and reenters pines through a parasitic fungus. An Idaho-wide program, led by a University of Idaho forestry professor, will seek infected material and establish inspection stations to prevent spread and protect timber value.
