Contractors Enjoy Christmas Holiday At Sunset Mine
Sam Hammer and Henning Bergquist, contracted to drive a crosscut on the C and FR in Sunset, visited last week and will stay past New Year. They report the crosscut extended 110 feet and a strong vein about 30 feet back, with 6 to 7 inches of lead carbonate and roughly three feet of quartz and iron. The vein was drilled and an adjacent vein 40 feet south found, suggesting the crosscut may need 60 to 75 feet more to reach it. Diamond drill shows carbonate ore and other vein material, indicating a stronger vein than the first.

The Miner prints a letter from H. Lewis Bell once connected with the Coeur d Alene Hardware and Foundry company. Now in Gary West Virginia he details his move from National Lead to United States Coal and Coke and describes developing a continuous hoist for deep coal mining. The system uses five ton skips, long pitches, and conveyor loaded cars to eliminate manual mining effort. The steel hoist, designed by United States Steel, is said to have a tension strength near 400000 psi and high elastic limit, aided by a new heat treatment.
