A private from the Foty-second Royal Regiment is brought before the Glasgow mayor for playing cards during divine service. He explains lack of Bible or prayer book on the march and uses the card faces to reflect religious symbolism, impressing the mayor with his reasoning.
A prisoner recites a curious allegory linking cards to biblical figures and numbers. The mayor defends religious freedom as the man, described as gifted with a six shooter, is praised as Samson-like yet flees when confronted by a formidable editor.
A man enraged by a newspaper article enters a town editor’s office and demands to meet the writer. He threatens “satisfaction” and describes the editor as a powerful man ready to strike. The incident unfolds as a tense exchange in the editorial room.
A mail stage from Jackson to Sacramento was stopped near Ione by two armed men. Passengers including Alexander Torges and E Johnson were relieved of cash watches and small valuables totaling around $1500. The bandits, one with a shotgun and one with a pistol, forced passengers off one by one and escaped with about $400 from the driver’s ledger and other plunder. Johnson’s purse was found later in the boot. reports estimate Wells Fargo & Co and others may add to the reward.
