Sailors Tell Tales in Winter Saloon on the River
In a riverside saloon seven or eight vessel owners and captains swap yarns on a cold winter night. A boastful tale of a near-drowning turns into a challenge as a stranger proclaims I am the man, leading to a mock duel and a tall claim about a century of ache. The crowd laughs and the Big Lie persists amid drink and rough humor.

Confession of a Husband and Oddities From a Penny Almanac
A humorous tale recalls a failed attempt at buckwheat cakes with improvised ingredients and a runaway yeast disaster that soaked the floor. It blends kitchen misadventure with the era’s wry social quips about marriage and fortune. Included are short vignettes: a California insured Chinaman, a London child murder stat, Irish death, and curious notices about hemp, farms, and a New York restaurant find.
