C M Harger argues the war's success hinges on prudent action and abating hysteria. He warns the conflict between expanding food production and marketing Liberty Loans, noting farm mortgages must finance growth. Banks, insurers, and land banks are only beginning to support farmers while the war continues.
The University of North Dakota summer session begins June 25 for six weeks, with classes five days a week through August 3. President McVey continues coordinating the International Conciliation program, emphasizing International Law, while most department heads stay for the summer courses.
The Meske murder trial for Deputy Sheriff Evan Jones of Hankinson opens Monday in district court with Judge Cooley of Grand Forks presiding. The case draws strong interest as Meske faces first degree murder charges. jurors are expected for the opening.
About twenty five auditors from North Dakota counties gathered in Wahpeton for a productive session. State Engineer Bliss gave the main address, with Langer absent. The group elected Chas E Fouts as president Ole J Eide as vice president and W R Tucker as secretary treasurer. Grand Forks was named next meeting site. They toured Camp Paradise on Lake Clitheral and visited Fergus Falls and the state asylum before returning.
Work on Dakota Avenue and Second Street toward the Great Northern tracks is speeding to paving. Breckenridge Wahpeton Street Railway Co plans relay of rails and ties and hopes to run cars the full distance by Saturday night barring tie shortages. Northwestern Telephone Co expects a crew to lay cable blocks from the bridge on Dakota Avenue to Second Street, enabling underground cabling without future pavement disruption.
Mrs Kressley and Mrs of Portal North Dakota have been visiting with their brother in law and sister Mr and Mrs H Korf. They left on Tuesday for Milwaukee Wisconsin for the trip.
In a letter the Old Settlers Association urges members to forgo annual meetings and donate 100 to a Liberty Bond or Red Cross fund. They stress duty amid world war, recalling Lincoln and heroic sacrifice while urging prudent, patriotic sacrifice from retirees, to support national efforts.
The summer meeting at Wickits on Medora promises to be highly entertaining and successful. Citizens’ generosity funds festivities for a star trip to Medora and the Bad Lands, with short snappy business sessions on vital craft topics and no dull moments ahead.

At a meeting of the Advisory Board of the Citizens Reserve the roll was pruned. Ten members were dropped for willful neglect of drills after failing to submit excuses to First Sergeant Rife. Four members, including Carl Mikkelson and M. M. McDonnell, Van I Ward and Wm Cody, have moved or will leave soon. Three have joined Company I for honorable discharge. C J Olson filled the open advisory post left by Young. Top Sergeant Rife elected by members remains to be filled. Squad No 4, the Globe Gazette squad, won the attendance prize. Hon W E Purcell will address the Reserve Company tomorrow morning.
The 23rd annual Richland county Sunday School convention met in Wahpeton on Thursday and Friday. Attendance was smaller than ideal but overall the event succeeded. Officers for the coming year include George Warner president at Great Bend Prof Todd vice president Wahpeton Mrs I L Wiar secretary Fairmount and Rev Juell treasurer Hankinson. From the 18th to the 25th a period of observation includes a dance and a rally at the Congregational church with speakers such as Guy Divet of Fargo, G Frankburg, and Rev. Ferry. On the 25th a ball game will be played at the local diamond.
Mrs Mary Eckes arrived to visit her son Win Eckes last Friday. She has been living at St Paul during the winter.
Richland County reports full subscription of its $75 000 allotment for the Liberty Loan. Elmer Myhre of Farmers and Merchants National Bank led the county effort, amid a strong national response as over 3 000 000 people participated in the loan drive. The government pace may pause until fall with excess war bond sales approaching 3 000 000 000 dollars signed by President Wilson.
The Methodist annual district rally met in Lisbon North Dakota June 12 15 with about 250 delegates including Rife Anna Bennett Pant Brown Mae Persons and Lola Escher from Wahpeton. Indian and African missionaries spoke with slides while tours and a welcome reception highlighted the program. Lisbon retained the rally for next year after Wahpeton’s invitation and Supt Anderson presided.
