Labor vote and the tariff clash in the 1908 campaign
Washington, July 23. Labor voters in Pennsylvania New Jersey and Ohio traditionally backed the Republican tariff protected industries yet the current race shows growing opposition to protectionism and the use of government injunctions. The report outlines how steel trust actions and wage data from 1906 affect worker support, the role of the Sunshine Club propaganda, and the need for campaign funds to sustain Democratic efforts, with two thirds of organized labor leaning toward Democrats. It notes scrutiny of law enforcement alongside a violent incident in Wahpeton and a court hearing set for August 12.
