Doctor Ward on Criminology at the Tombs Prison
The interview with Dr. O J Ward reveals his view that the Tombs offers a rich field for criminology study. He notes 75 percent suffer gastric or nervous issues and 35 percent are or have been opium or morphine addicts. He cites George Appo as a notable case and describes prisoners feigning illness to seek medical care. The source portrays urban crime, addiction, and prison health dynamics in stark terms.

Criminial Minds and Placebo Medicine At Blackwell’s Island
Dr Ward describes inmates from the workhouse on Blackwell's Island feigning illness to gain sympathy from benevolent women. He notes criminals seek mercy through stories of fall from grace, while many abuse credulity for sport. Placebos made of bread or colored water are prescribed as harmless deception.
