Favorable outlook for Humboldt river crops and beef trade

Lander County Wins Tax Case Against Central Pacific

The United States Supreme Court reversed Nevada’s ruling and held that the Central Pacific railroad lands are taxable. District Attorney W. D. Jones and assistant Henry Mayenbaum led the appeal, with Landers County to gain several thousand dollars from the railroad. Reno Gazette lauds Jones for public service and perseverance in the six year fight.

Piute tragedy in Smith Valley linked to tribal medicine man

A Piute squaw dies of consumption in Smith Valley after weeks of treatment by Dr. Joe a noted medicine man. Her burial includes a Wickiup fire and reports say the infant daughter was buried alive with her mother. The day after, the husband allegedly killed Dr. Joe, striking him twice and smashing his skull. In a separate note, J Nichollson advertises sales of household furniture.
