Jay Gould Will Sets New Standard In Estate Planning
In a striking departure from Astor and Vanderbilt practice Jay Gould wills his estate evenly among six children, with George receiving extra six million and Helen Gould getting the Fifth Avenue house and a larger annual sum to maintain a Gould household. The will appoints George and Helen as guardians, reflecting a measured, just approach to family fortunes. Surgeon General Wyman urges stopping immigration for a year to avert cholera and protect the World's Fair future, signaling rising anti-immigrant sentiment and potential economic disruption for steamship lines and Canadian routes.
