The Bristol Post Office faces an unusual wave of letters from lone western bachelors seeking names and addresses and even photographs of Bristol maidens. A spoof tale in The Record that spread claims the town’s famed architecture inspired the influx, leading to a flood of applicants and a longer postal line at mail time.
Chief Engineer George W. Melville plans to lengthen the Brooklyn’s funnel to 100 feet to improve coal draft and keep smoke from gunners. The long smokestack will vent smoke above the fighting tops and is stabilized to withstand storms. Eight states have formed a naval militia with promising, well equipped volunteer crews.
