Baylor and Waco shared a landmark weekend with a nationally televised game at Baylor Stadium. The Citizens office reports large crowds, a strong press presence, and local figures like George Wright and John Bridgers assisting a smooth broadcast amid celebrations and sentiment about future city plans and space program notes.
Patricia Ann Hixon, 19, received several blood transfusions at Providence hospital after a stabbing spree on Skid Row at 100 S. 3rd St. Her mother Virginia Winn, ex-wife of Hansel Rager, was wounded but released. Lois Gribble faced a $1000 bond on an assault charge. Witnesses say Gribble acted in self defense against three women including Jodie Lowrie. Virginia now lives in Fort Worth. Hixon has ties to Skid Row in Waco.
Waco McLennan Bar Association president W Lance Corsbie unveiled a themed service year at a Friday luncheon at Elite Steak House. Meetings will cover topics from finance and legislature to Medicare law and public relations with the aim of boosting legal aid and improving public image.
Baylor University begins its new year with about 1500 freshmen and high academic ratings. Some dorm space has been converted to living quarters and all housing is full. Classes start at 8 a.m. for day students and 5 30 p.m. for Evening Division. Saturday Sept 24 is the last registration day.
Public Health Service announced a $19 500 grant to Dr. N M Atkins Director of Waco McLennan Health Unit for immunization work in Waco McLennan County. Congressman W R Poage confirmed the allocation.
Congressman W. R. Poage will join a public hearing before the Civil Aeronautics Board Friday at 9 30 a m in the Civic room of the First National Bank. Charles Murphy CAB chairman will conduct the session, announced by Frank Hallenquist aviation chairman of the Waco Chamber of Commerce. POage supports adequate airline service for a city.
Texas Friday night grid action dominates Waco area with Richfield aiming for a district crown backed by strong defense led by Rick Hill Jim Goble Jack Post and Gary Freeman. Richfield kicker Roy Smith provided a 20 yard field goal in a 3 0 win at Tyler Lee.
A South Waco delegation urged the Waco city council to reverse or modify plans to close Speight Street to one way traffic near Highway 35 at 17th and 18th streets. About twenty business firms signed the petition, and the group, led by attorney Tom Moore Jr., asked for relief amid traffic concerns since the Intercity highway construction. The council offered no immediate remedy and scheduled to refer the matter to the Texas Highway Department with a meeting set for October 3.
A thousand Scottish Rite Masons celebrated the Feast of the Tabernacle with the annual Quail Dinner at Karem Shrine Temple. Plans were announced for the Scottish Rite Cathedral to be built at 28th and Waco Drive next year to mark the order’s hundredth anniversary.
Members of the Baylor University Rodeo Association led a trailride from Robinson Roping Arena to Baylor Stadium before the Baylor Syracuse football game. Billy Jack Johnson, Baylor graduate and trailride superintendent, expressed satisfaction with nationwide color television coverage.
