JayCees Launch Air Watch Over Central Texas

The nations first Opera tion Air Watch by the local Jaycees began last Friday with wide publicity. Price Is Right featured the project on TV, United Press International distributed a bulletin, and radio station WACO cooperated by broadcasting 30 minute traffic bulletins relayed from Jaycee airplanes over central Texas highways. At press time operations ran smoothly.

Ranger Joe Thompson halts Negro hijacker at garage

Deputy Sheriff Joe Thompson a former Texas Ranger shot the assailant John Thomas Evans 17 after Evans robbed an automotive garage at 407 Washington and threatened attendants. Evans wounded in the stomach shoulder and hand underwent surgery for ruptured intestines as officials guard him awaiting statements.

Governors visit after quarantine talk in Waco August 1890

Gov Sal Ross met Waco Mayor McCullough and Marlin Mayor Shelton at the Old Mc Clellarn Hotel to discuss a Marlin quarantine amid rumors of a smallpox outbreak. They reported light cases, but Marlin officials ordered Waco residents to depart. Ross warned he would deploy Rangers if incidents recurred.

Low Interest Rate Obtained For School Bonds

Burial Today for Sidney J Stem 90 Years Old

Sidney J Stem died at 8:30 Sunday morning at age 90 born April 1870. He worked as a salesman until a year ago and was watched over by his son Detective Captain Stem Sr and other relatives. He was grandfather to Wiley Stem Jr City Attorney and Alva Stem Recreational Superintendent. He will be buried in Prairie Hill beside his wife with services at Wilkinson Hatch funeral parlor at 10 a m Tuesday.

Waco considers new cultural center for Negro youth

Waco School Board weighs a plan to create a cultural and recreational center in East Waco for Negroes with a $30,000 grant from the Cooper Foundation. The project includes a Doris Miller YMCA branch and a West Live Oak Street library, with land from the school district and shared facilities with G L Wiley Junior High.
