Store Keeper First Class Billie G. Helleson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry L. Helleson of 3825 Belmont Dr, Waco, Texas, serving on the destroyer USS Uhlmann, took part in exercise Black Bear in the Eastern Pacific from September 30 to October 4.
University Jr High PTA honored its president Mrs Wilburn Curnutt with a Texas Parent-Teacher Life membership at the October meeting. Curnutt, active in PTA at Kendrick and University Jr High, plans to attend the State Convention in San Antonio in November. The PTA also donated a library book in memory of Mrs T J Cochran, who died this summer.
H C Deaton Jr director of planning and right of way for Waco resigns effective November 15 to start his own business. He says leaving before working with new City Manager O K Armstrong, a strong advocate of city planning, is his greatest regret.

The Texas Bureau of Business Research reports a 4 percent seasonally adjusted drop in the state business activity index for September 1963. Dr. John R. Stockton notes erratic 1963 figures but smoothing suggests the business cycle timing point not yet reached, while construction authorizations fell 17 percent from August. James J. Kelly cites reduced residential and nonresidential permits statewide.
Baylor University plans Homecoming events honoring distinguished exes from Waco to Guadalajara Mexico. Thomas Ponton Cobb 77, class of 1913, will travel from Mexico to reunite with his alma mater after fifty years apart. Returning 1913 alumni include Napoleon Hunt John E Wolf and family members from Houston Gainesville and Franklin, highlighting the long-standing ties of the 1913 class.

Judge Bill Logue announced Gene Parsons accepted the Chairmanship of the 1963 Christmas Seal Campaign. Parsons is sales manager of the Pure Milk Company and said the drive funds a voluntary program to wipe out tuberculosis and control other respiratory diseases in the community.
Private Roland E. Spearman, husband of Joy Spearman who lives at 1417 South 29th Street in Waco Texas, is set to finish an eight week communications center specialist course at The Southeastern Signal School Fort Gordon Georgia on October 26. The 25 year old soldier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Spearman of 1808 Twelve Street, entered the Army in May 1963.
First Lt. Robert A. Ator of Washington D C is a member of the 8 52 Stratofortress crew selected as the Outstanding Crew for the 461st Bomb Wing at Amarillo AFB Texas.

Mrs Henry Harris attends a Poetry Society of Texas Awards Reception and Dinner at the Statler Hilton Dallas tonight with Mr Harris and their son Johnny. She is set to speak before the Wortham Study Club in Wortham, discussing poetry and reading from her book Shadows in The Sand.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service of Herring Avenue Methodist Church observed a Call to Prayer and Self Denial. Mrs Burl Hillyer led with several members assisting and Mrs Urban Schultz gave the prayer. The program traces to 1887 with the Mission Board emphasis and notes WSCS and Wesleyan Service Guild prayer weeks since 1939.

Mrs. Margaret Royal Edwards spoke at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in the Richfield High School initiation ceremony for the Edwards Literary Society, named in her honor. Charter members include Phyllis Beckham, Stephen Beckham, Jerry Beddow, Carol Boedeker, Gary Campbell, and many others. Beth Stiles, the English teacher, sponsors the society to honor students with outstanding English grades and high overall averages and to promote literature and creative writing.

Fidelis Matrons Class of Third Street Baptist Church honored their teacher of the past 20 years, Mrs. Sally Copeland, at a birthday banquet in Bertrand's Restaurant. Copeland gave the welcoming address with guests including Mrs. George Smith, incoming class president, Mrs. Pansy Schneider, retiring president, and Mrs. Ida Gammon, longtime church worker with Copeland.
