Mrs. Elizabeth McDowell of 210 North 20th Street faces arson charges, claiming a drunken stupor led her to sign a statement accusing her of setting fire to her home. Fire Chief Leslie Summey filed the complaint. bond set at 2500 dollars. Her case awaits grand jury action in June.
Final exams end Tuesday with report cards to follow and summer vacation starting. Baccalaureate services were held Sunday for four high schools and commencement runs Monday and Tuesday evenings. Notables include Justice Frank Wilson delivering the address to Waco High seniors at the Heart of Texas Coliseum, with Avery Downing speaking for University High, and Baylor granting 580 degrees last Friday. Waco High completed 422 graduates and Moore High 106, with University High, Moore High, and the Negro Moore High program also noted.
About 4000 locals packed the Kiwanis Air Show as Frank Price Ted Chandler Sam Carter and Gene Mason performed loops rolls and flips. The Dallas Skydivers made a crisp jump while Gene Mason drove the car and photographers clung tight. A glider flight a burrow trade in and a crop duster display rounded out a lively first time event despite a morning shower.
A highly classified rocket fuel explosion at Rocketdyne division of North American Aviation in McGregor Friday killed Melvin M. Houston 29 and injured Bernard Mclawthon 30 JR McGlothin 22 and Steven L. Heller 22. Houston is home in McGregor burial in Sweetwater Oklahoma. Cawthon funeral held in McGregor with body sent to Dallas for burial.
The death of 64 year old Alex Kednig occurred after a street incident described as an accident. Police and jail staff noticed a severe head wound, Kednig died in hospital the following day. An autopsy cited cardiac fibrillation alcoholic delirium tremors and brain contusion. Kednig lived at the Starr Hotel and left no public notice of his death.
Baylor University conferred degrees on 624 students at the Heart of Texas Coliseum. Maj Gen Earl Rudder urged that Americans protect democratic life through strict separation of church and state and a diversified higher education system to safeguard individual rights.
Westview National Bank, newly chartered by the FDIC, will open in a temporary Golden Triangle location in Waco. It is the sixth bank to start in the Greater Waco area and plans a 40,008 square foot main building with 5 extra floors possible later. The bank lists services from checking and savings to various loans and personalized pocket checks, with a building bid set for June 2.
Mrs Nita Lyon and her husband Ed Lyon opened a cafe at 1720 Colcord named Nita's Dinette across from Providence hospital. The Lyons bring cafe experience from Hickory Stick Roy Bertand's and prior grocery ventures. Opening day business was good and patrons praised home cooked foods.
Ed Carpenter leads in early signer results with 22 subscriptions as students recruit peers through a school driven campaign. Bill Foster says the plan reaches homes and families, offering prizes like bicycles and a Kit Kart sold by Bob Sherman in the Beverly Hills district for 123 dollars.
Charles Trnwell owner of the Peek-A-Boo Lounge on Circle Road reported a drunken patron damaged a 1958 Oldsmobile coach. Police issued a lookout for a 27 year old white male on Clemson Crowell. Charges include drunkenness and destroying private property.
Leste Vernon James and Anne Beland Hamilton, aged 59 and 55, posted bonds of 1000 dollars each in Fort Worth and were arrested after highway patrolmen stopped their car for a traffic violation in Waco. A cache of stolen merchandise valued over 450 dollars, largely recovered, was found. Detective Guy noted James's seven penitentiary terms and Hamilton's three.
