Waco Newsmen and an Austin editor flew to Williams Air Force Base Phoenix Arizona to dedicate a Korean War Memorial. An F86 Sabre Jet will memorialize fliers who died in the conflict with Major Tommy Thompson as flight commander.

Twelfth Air Force Marching Band Based at JCAFB

The Twelfth Air Force Marching Band moved to James Connally AFB in September 1958 from Cannon AFB New Mexico. The 35 piece unit performs marching concert and small dance bands for events. Bandleader CWO Henry Jr Gawers and TSgt Gene Egge lead the group which serves Twelfth Air Force bases and supports James Connally mission.

Juries Dismissed After Deadlock In Two DWI Cases

Judge Vic Hall dismissed a second jury this week after a deadlock in a driving while intoxicated case. The trial was halted after a two hour and 40 minute session, echoing a May 6 proceeding where jurors met for five hours and ten minutes. Trials will be reset in both cases.

Polio victim Gilbert A Tilberry was granted permission to run a TV repair shop from his home at 33rd and Lyle after a planning board recommendation to deny the exception. Commissioner action followed a 350-signature petition. No protests filed and attorney K E Jones stated neutrality. Southwest Baptist church gains two more weeks to meet under the tent at Second and James. Gilberry’s wife attended with four children. If denied the business would be shut down. A utility easement no longer needed was abandoned.

Col G B Palmer spoke at a noon Waco Jaycees meeting, saluting Armed Forces week. A Dahlonega native and 18 year veteran, the 39 year old command pilot earned the Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf clusters, Air Medal, and Croix de Guerre after 190 B 24 combat hours in Europe.

City Commissioners Approve Designs for New Fire Stations

City Council approval Tuesday enables architects Easterwood-Easter and Mrennan to begin planning a $52000 fire station at Lake Ayr Drive and Dobbs Drive featuring a contemporary design with a 16 by 22 foot living room kitchen and dining area and a 32 by 27 foot dormitory. Architectural work for another station near Park Lake Drive and North 33rd St. will be initiated by Walter Cocke Jr.

Two Board Appointments for City Zoning Boards

William Parks was named to fill the vacancy on the zoning board of adjustment joining Mrs. Harold Ambler. The five men who handled the Southern Building Code work form the new building code panel: Carroll C. Martin, William W. Taylor Jr., David R. Henrick, Robert S. Bennett, and William E. Darden. Both boards will operate in an advisory capacity, with a public hearing on the zoning ordinance set for June 9.

Base Commander Welcomes Visitors to Demonstration

James Connally opens a 1959 Day demonstration at the base with the theme Power for Peace. He invites visitors to see air power and defensive capabilities on the sky and parking apron while stressing informed citizens and America's security.

Armed Forces Day Schedule of Events

A detailed timetable lists aircraft flyovers and demonstrations from 10:14 am to 4:15 pm. Flights include B-57, F-89, F-88, B-47, KC-97, B-52, T-33, F-86, F-29, F-100, KC-135, C-119, F-9, B-25, T-208, and static displays such as Aero Club, Cessna 172s, and various trainer aircraft. The parade of base personnel and helicopter demonstrations are also scheduled.

City Seeks Bids for Alley Reconstruction and Truck Purchase

City of Waco to receive bids June 3 for concrete alley work between 7th and 9th streets and for the purchase of a pickup truck. Waco Housing Authority funds $3,612.64 in lieu of taxes. Insurance premium $2,792.40 paid for water works vehicle liability. Judge Valentine recommends refund of a $25 cash bond to a juvenile. Lipsitz contract sets minimum $100 monthly or $3 per ton for trash. Lorn Aronson’s claim reduced to $241.87 from $296.20 due to city negligence involving a manhole.
