Heritage Society of Waco hosts a two day tour of six historic homes drawing crowds surpassing four hundred on Thursday and eight hundred on Friday. The Mann House built by John Wesley Mann in 1867 features geraniums and is near the Brazos River. Funds aided by the Cooper Foundation with current restoration led by Mrs. Maurice C Barnes. Books by local figures on sale at Mann House and at Baylor events.
City Manager Armstrong reported six months in Waco showing optimism and cooperation from department heads as budgeted programs will be met. Finance Director Sorrells outlined insurance in good shape, urging property inventories and expanded coverage on machinery with premiums totaling $10,747.99. Reduction efforts and possible premium cuts were discussed as council pressed for more details.
Fire destroyed a Ridgewood Country Club building early Thursday night. Eight Waco fire units fought the blaze as water supplies had to be replenished several times.
The Central Texas Kennel Club hosts its third dog show starting Sunday at the General Exhibits building on the Heart O' Texas Fair grounds. Entry fee is one dollar with registrations starting at 1 p.m. Sunday. Admission to the public is free.
Documents of General Douglas MacArthur’s speech “Old Soldiers Never Die” arrive at the Citizen office. Printed on lifetime parchment and in an attractive envelope, they are sold below cost for 25 cents each or free with a new or renewed subscription.
Central Texans joined Congressman W. R. Poage in Washington to urge the House Appropriations Committee to fund a 17 million dollar water project. The request covers the Krazos river basin and related water developments in the region.
The League of Women Voters of Texas voices support for Waco’s city-manager government at a two-session forum held at the Waco Public Library on Austin Avenue. Panelist Mrs. Kathy Faulkner led the three-member group while Mrs. Whitmore argued the pro side citing postwar adoption trends among U S cities and noting California and Texas leading the states.
The Pepsi-Cola bottling strike moved to court after management filed for a $200000 damages suit for false arrest. A temporary restraining order was issued by District Judge D Y McDaniel to curb violence or disorder by strikers. James Chandler filed the suit, while bottling operations continued with replacements hired from the Soft Drink Workers union.
Mrs Daphine Miller of Center 2413 North 22nd Street Waco received a plaque as Goodwill Worker of the Year chosen from three finalists by a committee including Judge Ray Mormino Mrs Julius Taylor and Dr R K Gassier. Miller has worked with Goodwill since May 1958 after a prior hospital stay in Denver aided by the Jewish Consumptive Relief Society.
Today, Saturday, voters choose nominees in Democratic and Republican primaries to appear on the November general election ballot. Local precincts report steady turnout as residents decide party choices for key races.
Twelve Waco Jaycees and wives attended the Texas Junior Chamber of Commerce State Convention in Corpus Christi. The group won six awards for community efforts and two individual honors went to James Ray Hawkins who received the Outstanding Local Treasurer award and had earlier earned the Sam Oliver Trophy as Outstanding Jaycee of the Year. Jim Reese of Odessa was elected State President for 1965. The 1965 convention will be in El Paso. Attendees from Waco included John Cawood Wallace Brooks Wilmer Earhart Bob Sheehy Sam Oliver Randy Gray Don Watson Roy Marlow Wayne Dickens Don Parsons Jackie Thornton and Jim Hawkins.
Quick rumor spread Thursday claiming Citizen editor W. S. Foster had a heart attack. Virgil Holcomb rushed to the courthouse to aid and report. Foster and Holcomb later said the reports were highly exaggerated and they were both well.
Waco Public Library reports 500 Friends members toward a 1964 goal of 1,000 set by the Board of Friends of the Library. President Mrs Neill Simpson says solicitations will continue to invite new members and renewals from former members to boost community library standards per American Library Association guidelines.
George Chase was elected president of the Waco McLennan County Bar Association to succeed Lyndon Olson Friday noon at Elite Steak House. New officers will be installed after the State Bar meeting on July 4.
