Labor Decrease in McLennan County Sees Job Losses
The civilian labor force fell by 350 to about 59,895 in mid January. Nonagricultural employment dropped 1,280 to 54,810 while unemployment rose 875 to 2,875 or 4.8 percent. Retail trade bore the largest decline among sectors as nonfarm employment declined and housewives left the labor pool.

Drivers Education Short of Funds Reveals Enrollment Gaps
The American Automobile Association reports only half of eligible high school students enroll in accredited driver education due to funding and facilities. Nationwide 1,509,917 of 2,994,653 eligible students took the course last year. In Texas 49,707 of 182,731 eligible students and 961 of 1,366 high schools offered the training.

Baptists Plan Massive Missionary Effort Across Border
The Baptist General Convention of Texas Executive Board approved a broad missionary thrust along the Texas Mexico border. It authorized the State Missions Commission to join with the Texas Baptist Woman's Missionary Union in promoting a state offering to support border missions and related work. The board also backed actions on liquor legislation and hospital purchases, per executive secretary T A Patterson in an open letter to Gov John Connally.

Police Cadet Program Proving Effective in Waco

McLennan County Sets 1967 Bond Goal at 280000
County Savings Bonds chair Olin Hudson announced a 1967 goal of 280000 for McLennan County. January sales reached 302099, about 11 percent of the county target, as Texas statewide goal stands at 181.3 million with E and H sales up 18 percent from 1966. Johnson Johnson Asks Red Cross Help Campaign Opening
President Lyndon Johnson of Texas opens the 1967 American Red Cross Campaign for Members and Funds appealing for increased support. In March Red Cross Month about 1,800 of over 3,000 chapters will launch campaigns while the rest fundraise through United Fund drives in the fall. Some chapters will conduct educational campaigns to recruit volunteers blood donors and students for safety and health classes.
