Waco city council heard Airline Cab's bid for operating permits after contentious discussion. Former city attorney to appear on notice issues while Yellow Cab officials were absent. August 9 hearing date set amid protests on zoning.
A Wednesday meeting of about twenty downtown merchants and property owners discussed a years in the making plan to revitalize downtown Waco. They backed President Bob Armstrong in urging city council support, questioned funding, and urged public input while planning for curb canopies and new planter boxes.
Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham, now prime minister of Guyana, arrived at Connally Air Base aboard a White House aircraft for a 4 p.m. visit to Connally Technical Institute invited by T. A. Talbot. Burnham, 43, born in Guyana, praised the reception before the party departed for Austin just before 7 p.m.
Zoo visitors will see new arrivals including a Gila Monster from New Mexico and six inch tree frogs from Mexico. Marine toads with poisonous warts and ant eaters from South America are expected soon. The Mexican animals were donated by Dr. Bruce Brown. The Cen Tex Zoo near the airport charges 10 cents admission.
Woodway City Council set September 15 to vote on about three million dollars in bonds for a sewer system water works street repairs and a park. The average home valued at twenty thousand dollars would face roughly eight dollars per month in taxes.
The Air Force Cross was presented posthumously to Captain Willard M. Collins Friday at 2 p.m. by Major General Henry G. Thorne Jr. Mrs. Mary Collins, widow, accepted the decoration at 12th AF Headquarters.
Jim Bock has resigned as first assistant district attorney under Don Hall. Hall says he has not chosen a successor yet. Bock will join the office of Sam Jones et al. Hall plans to schedule cases for disposal when Judge Vic Hall returns from vacation. Beck returns to Waco with other interests and had once planned to run for district attorney before Eichelberger secured the post.
The July 28 Waco Citizen photo misnamed runner-up Donna Dickey instead of Debbie Moon and Debbie Lillard. Debbie Moon was sponsored by the Beverly Hills Lions Club. Moon and Lillard should be listed as runners-up in the Southern Teenage Baseball Sweetheart feature.
Tim Jones at the Central Texas Zoo plans to deodorize eight new skunks donated to the facility. He uses a safer method by removing two scent glands, but one skunk sprayed him in the eye and clothing despite goggles. The deodorized skunks are slated for display Sunday.
City officials expect a crowded Tuesday session as Young Brothers seeks a permit for a gravel plant near the Brazos river. Opponents push to keep the area residential for Negro residents. City holds patent rights to the Brazos river with a reversion clause. a large turnout is anticipated for a safety matter.
Nine Texas Baptist colleges and universities are invited to a cooperative ventures workshop August 31 to September 2 at Lakeview Methodist Assembly near Palestine. The event aims to strengthen Christian education through interinstitutional cooperation and will be sponsored by the Baptist General Convention of Texas Christian Education Commission.
Mart Texas official William Scott 46 has started a two week course at the University of Missouri Extension Division Community Action Training Center in Columbia MO. The workshop co sponsored by the Office of Economic Opportunity targets CAP directors to expand methods for administering community action programs and rural development.
Al Bracken district manager of the Waco Social Security Office said some older people enrolled for doctor bill insurance may be unable to pay the full nine dollar quarterly premium. He noted they may pay three or six dollars for one or two months but should resume payments as soon as possible.
