L P Nichols of McGregor grew the first bale of cotton in McLennan county this year. It was ginned near East Waco around noon Wednesday. The bale was ginned free by A E Jones. About fifty premiums were given Nichols by the Waco Chamber of Commerce. Date of the auction will be announced. This was the earliest date with exception of July 14 1954.
Billy Hammond, a local businessman and world traveler, sent a telegram to Congress urging support for Senator McClellen's anti-trust approach to unions, claiming it would end union monopoly and defeat civil rights measures, with broader calls to block Cuba actions, disarmament, UN Charter, and foreign aid. He signs as Williams Hammond.
Lake Air National Bank announced that all checking account holders opened between April 6 and August 6 qualify as Charter Depositors earning lifetime exemption from service charges. The policy aims to boost new banking services in Waco with extended hours and growing deposits, reporting a 21 percent rise in deposits in 84 days. Depositors must open with at least $50 to receive Charter Depositor Certification and Agreement.

The 15th annual Texas Farm Bureau Institute will run July 30 through August 2 at the Adolphus Hotel. C. H. DeVaney, president of the Texas Farm Bureau, said the theme is Power in the People and aims to boost individual farmer participation in the 1964 general election while noting the bureau itself stays nonpartisan.
City hall meeting details 800 acre Downtown renewal area with color slides maps shown to civic leaders. Urban renewal director Hank Corwin introduced Wallace Scott Dan Stewart Ed Findley Jim Witt Bob Green and Jack Yardner who contributed to the project. Area inspected on foot. preliminary report to go to the council and trigger a federal loan request.
The Central Texas Association of Fire Fighters held its monthly meeting in Robinson. Firemen from Killeen Copperas Cove Lampasas Nolanville Lorena McGregor Belton and Tempe gathered at the Robinson fire station. Meetings rotate among towns each month. After supper the group held an educational firefighting program.
Navy Mothers Club 193 will meet Thursday July 25 in the home of Mrs. G F Haley 2728 Maple at 10 30 a m. Various games will be played and a covered dish luncheon served. All members urged to attend. Prospective members welcome to join the day with the club.
Mayor W B Lenamon explains his vote to discharge City Manager Terrell Blodgett citing his poor relations with staff and citizens and a dictatorial attitude. Blodgett refused resignation with two months pay. The three who voted for dismissal were elected in April by a large majority, as Lenamon vows to act in Waco's best interests while maintaining independent views.
Five Central Texas high school girls will be chosen as Heart O' Texas Air Smiles Queens. A Smile queen will be designated for each night of the fall rodeo, October 15. The eliminations contest is set for August 12 in Waco. Eligible entrants must be juniors or seniors in Central Texas high schools for the September term.
