Pat Cloud of Houston, 20, a Baylor student, is in Miami Beach Florida vying for Miss Universe after winning Miss Texas at Lake Whitney on July 1. She promoted the Whitney contest and helped backstage for Dub King Associates while signing up contestants. The pageant runs a week with the winner announced July 4 on CBS.
The Civil Air Patrol Waco Composite Squadron awarded six cadets proficiency certificates after completing Phase II aviation education and activities. Recipients Kenneth Thomas J M Mullins Lou Fe Meeks Vernon Womack Edwin Estes and Larry Ewers qualify for future CAP programs and scholarships.

Robinson taxpayers formed a committee last Thursday to protest a proposed rise in property valuations in the Robinson Independent School District. The group plans to meet with trustees as the district’s tax equalization board prepares three days of hearings this week. Taxpayers argue the 40 percent threshold for assessed versus actual value is too high, naming committee members QP Cain Bill Morgan RR Grove WoL Stefka Willie Schaeffer Marion Hatfield and RF Fain.
District Judge D W Bartlett set the murder trial of John Junior James for July 18 in the 14th District Court. James faces an indictment for the January 24 killing of Waco shopper John M Blackford during a Beverly Hills style robbery at Brookview Shopping Center Pigely Wiggly store. Defense sought venue change but was denied after two hours of testimony. Court appointed attorneys Bob Ziesenheim and Bill Brighan to represent James. Loyal Lavon James has prior robbery and murder convictions.
Robert Elis Biles told Waco police that Joyce Belle, 15, drank beer and brandy in his Ford car until she passed out. He carried her to a hospital, then to the police station. His car was towed to the city pound while he admitted giving the intoxicants. They reside with his wife on Route 2, McGrevor on the Waco road.
Petitions urging a 4 million dollar road bond issue are to be presented to the commissioners court Tuesday pushed by the Wao Chamber of Commerce. More than 1000 names were gathered Saturday and additional signatures will follow. The proposal seeks 2 million for state highway right of way and 1 million for county roads and bridges.
Walter Ham pton resigns as Beverly Hills city marshal and temporary successor with prior law enforcement experience is tentatively chosen to handle holiday traffic. Ham pton plans to appeal a Dallas hearing after losing his 12th Air Force service job. City council notes his loss will be hard to replace. Mam ton resigns prior to petitions after a Waco police arrest and $25 fine for disturbing the peace.
Transfer of two Tactical Air Command supersonic fighter wings from Ninth Air Force to Twelfth Air Force realigns Aero space Power. Ninth Air Force HQ at Shaw AFB controls troop carrier and missile training units while Twelfth Air Force HQ in Waco commands tactical fighters and training wings.
Walter Panky dog catcher retrieved a foot long alligator from a garage at 1014 Indiana then brought it to the Central Texas Zoo after a brief police stop. Eddie Daniels reported the creature, accused of biting a kitten, as officers logged the incident at the neighborhood station.
Lake Waco saw extended police boat patrols over the July 4 period led by Captain George Red Francis. Officers Bob Lillard and Fred Stengel assisted as they enforced water safety laws requiring life jackets for skiers and additional observers, with other legal requirements checked.

William Thomas Farrar 22 of 09 Sanger Ave charged with arson in the June 23 fire at Modern Appliance Company 1516 Austin Avenue. The complaint by District Attorney Burney Walker filed in Justice of the Peace court. Farrar released on $1000 bond after giving statement claiming he set the fire while closing the store. Farrar had applied months earlier for a job as a firefighter with the Waco Fire Department.
