National Safety Council awards Texas a top grade for reducing traffic fatalities to 2,314 last year. In Waco James D. Hill presents the city’s Traffic Inventory to the City Council as engineers receive awards under the Slow Down and Live campaign urging cautious driving.

Assistant District Attorney Don Hall filed a complaint against Gary Wayne Miller and Kenneth Edward Leggett both 17 of North Sixth Street Waco Texas charged with Robbery by Assault. The case will go before the next Grand Jury in about a month. They stopped a pickup near Proctor and North Nineteenth and assaulted Terry Webb 14 and Jackie Nolan Braswell 14 taking about 75 cents. One teen threatened to stomp the youths.
Buddy Porterfield, Cen-Tex Zoo manager, readies for a surge of visitors as a six week old mountain lion cub and other animals attract crowds. The 10 cent admission runs 8 30 to 6 30 with late hours. ongoing construction adds a new reptile house and lecture space while the birthday house rents for five dollars for parties with a zoo tour.
The Fish Pond stages an all day event for members and guests with a 7:45 9:45 am breakfast pool opening a 10 am tennis tournament indoor games at 2 pm swimming events at 4:30 pm the Miss Fish Pond Contest for girls under six at 5:30 pm supper at 6 pm and fireworks at 7:45 pm Johnny Watkins and his wife chair the day.
The town of West schedules its traditional Fourth of July Picnic at West Lodge No 54 S P J S T hall. Bob Poage serves as principal speaker with a noon barbecue, 3 30 music by Slim Haisler s Play Boys of Temple and a 5 30 Poage speech followed by a 6 00 barbecue supper. A choo choo train games and concession stands are set up with Slim s boys to perform at 8 00 for a dance.
Mary L Warner a 33 year old nurse at Providence Hospital was arrested Sunday night after the pharmacy reported missing narcotics. She had worked at the hospital since June 21 and faces charges by the District Attorney as a narcotic addict.
Bobby Baker, 32, of 1414 Baylor, accepted a one year sentence Monday in the Court of Criminal Appeals. He was tried and convicted on February 2 for being an accessory to armed robbery connected with the HEB at %th and Webster. The case had been previously tried and appealed.
Ross Crane, 26, of 3 Lee Street, was sentenced to 90 days in the county jail after pleading guilty in Vie Hails Court for carrying a pistol. He will be sent to Houston after serving his sentence and had been sought on a statewide pickup for Jumping bond.
The Waco Lions Club released its new committee roster for the coming year led by president Tommy Suits who oversees all panels. Suits is attending the International Lions Convention in Nice France.
Downtown Waco shows busy weekends as free parking meters attract shoppers and visitors. A new Waco radio station moves to 806 Austin with strong signals from downtown, while Lake Air Center reports its largest sidewalk sale. Police report arrests on Franklin during the day and a new Southgate Post Office opens in TG Y Store.
Karem Shrine Temple schedules its annual Independence Day picnic at the Waco Syrian Association club grounds on the old McGregor Highway. The event runs 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with hot dogs, drinks, ice cream, a state band concert, train rides, hay rides, and a parade, expecting about 600 attendees.
Donald Saffel a 10 year old rider of a bicycle at Hillcrest Hospital in Waco Texas has been there since June 19. He was struck by a car breaking one leg and getting brushed.
