Rudolph C. Mendiola, a former San Antonio notary public, pleaded guilty in U. S District Court in Austin to three counts of willfully aiding in the preparation of false income tax returns. He faced potential penalties up to nine years in prison and a $15,000 fine with sentencing set for February 5.
Harold Adam boosted the Citizen subscription list with about three hundred new readers over two weeks. He earned 102 dollars for the week ending January 20 and 135 dollars for the week ending January 27, the best weekly total since he began selling in the summer of 1961, averaging 60 dollars per week. Baylor Foundation launches its 1962 fund drive with a Back Baylor luncheon where over 250 workers will hear final instructions. Four Waco Girl Scouts from Senior Troop No. 32 were chosen to join the Bluebonnet patrol for the National Girl Scout Roundup at Button Bay Vermont July 18 31 1962. Selected were Sharon Wheat Frances Scheinbrun Joyce Goeke and Sue Winn with nine other council members. The Senior Roundup occurs every three years. the last was in 1959 at Colorado Springs Colorado.
Baylor University President Abner V. McCail announced a February 15 ground breaking for a $2 million science building. The 104,300 square foot facility will stand east of the Rena Marrs McLean Gymnasium, funded by the Baylor-Waco Foundation with bids opened from the Beau mont firm Pitts Mebane and Phelps. An honored guest, Mrs Marrs McLean of San Antonio, will attend, with a luncheon preceding the ceremony.
Sixty three Baylor University students depart Waco Thursday morning for a four day Leadership Laboratory at Howard E and Butt Ranch near Leakey. The program is sponsored by Baylor Student Congress in conjunction with the Hogg Foundation.
Postmaster E C Norwood receives replies to his plea for a bird deterrent near the post office windows. He plans to try a mist of ammonia, noting that Washington used this method when Kenedy was installed.
Texas Rangers and local officers halted a major burglary and safe cracking operation spanning about 75 counties. James Hugh Leggett, 33, was captured after a statewide probe tied to more than 200 burglaries. Leggett faces multiple charges in Austin Big Spring Vernon Georgetown Gatesville and Bell County with others linked to seven Austin area safeburglary incidents.
