Citizens face a January 31 deadline to pay the poll tax or obtain an exemption as election year activity looms. The city enforces traffic and dog ordinances, while Baylor campus projects and Shriner relief efforts unfold. Local politics surge with Connally and Yarborough campaigns, and a Belton burglary ring ties into wider thefts across three counties.
The Baylor-Waco Foundation reports nearly finished with its fund-raising campaign. All major section leaders captains and lieutenants for the first three divisions are enlisted. The remaining three divisions will be completed early next week.
The U S Corps of Engineers proposes two reservoir storage spaces to trap flood waters for future urban and industrial water supplies. The Authority will buy the storage capacity for 11.5 million dollars, repaid over sixty years by selling water to industries and towns.
Downtown Waco Unlimited names J and J Copy Shop as its public relations partner. Mrs Jeane Cook and Mrs June Der Garabedian head the firm and will run all promotion from 228 Liberty Building. Cook brings extensive advertising background including World War II wartime work and leadership in the Waco Advertising Club. Der Garabedian, trained in drama and advertising, returns from Dallas to freelance with her sister.
Democratic Women of McLen nan County announce an Open House to honor new and prospective members January 26 from 7 to 9 p m at Town Hall in Waco Lake Air Center. Chair man Mrs William Templer reports progress on the membership drive and guests may pay pot tax. Newly elected officers will greet attendees and assume duties.
Nash Oliver, longtime McLennan County legal figure, enters the race for justice of the peace, precinct 1, place 2. Former assistant district attorney and 10 year justice of the peace, he previously served two terms as county court at law judge and now seeks election to the justice court. He lives with his wife Thelma McBride at 3004 Live Oak Avenue and urges countywide support.
Herman Coleman, 32, vice president at National City Bank in Waco, receives the 1961 Distinguished Service Award from the Waco Junior Chamber of Commerce for civic and banking contributions. Born in Waxahachie, he studied at Baylor, joined Dallas National Bank, then moved to Waco in 1956 rising to vice president by 1960. he is married to Sandra Mayfeld.
The Baylor University service club Alpha Phi Omega awards its annual $300 scholarship to Sanne Segler, a Fort Worth sophomore. The prize is given each year to a second semester sophomore for the 1962 spring semester.
L. B. Ewing announced Monday evening his candidacy for County Commissioner of Precinct 4, covering North Waco Bosqueville Mc Gregor Crawford Speegleville and nearby areas.
Subscriptions to the Citizen newspaper rise daily since January with an average of two new subscribers per day. Renewal urged. call PL 4-3511 for renewal or expiry checks. Numerous new subscribers listed by name and address across multiple streets and drives.
About 2 000 students from Waco and Central Texas high schools are invited to a January 26 benefit dance from 9 30 p m to midnight at the Westview Rollercade. Charles Pack and his orchestra will provide music. Tickets cost 60 cents and are sold at several local shops.

President Abner McCall announced at a Baylor-Waco Foundation luncheon that the drive will channel gifts into land and improvements for the campus expansion. He estimated near five million dollars in future Baylor expenditures and land projects, with a focused pre-drive on gifts of one thousand dollars or more before February 1.
