The Wice Citizen urges ward by ward representation for city council. It endorses Col. Donald Beck a retired Air Force officer with radio repair work and civic service as the most suitable candidate amid East Waco rivals. City voters across Waco consider April 5 election with three candidates for each ward. East Waco contenders include Henry L. Yancey and Dr C H Radford facing retiree Donald Beck. northwest and southwest seats open as Dr Howard Dudgeon and L M Lowden enter. Debate centers on ward representation and democratic fairness amid civil rights context.
Everything is in readiness for the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet to be held at the Coliseum Monday night at seven o clock.
Bud Wilkinson former Oklahoma coach and Life time Sports Foundation president will hold a press conference in the Baylor Student Union at 3 30 p m January 27. He directs the Lifetime Sports Clinic opening session in Waco January 27 29 at Baylor Sports and Recreation Camp and will speak at the first general session at 7 30 p m January 27.

Driver Administrator of Veterans Affairs will dedicate the new VA Regional Office at 1400 North Valley Mills Drive in Waco at 3 30 p m and will speak at the Waco Chamber of Commerce Banquet at Heart of Texas Coliseum at 7 p m He heads the VA the nations third largest employer with 57 regional offices 162 hospitals and over 200 facilities He will visit VA Hospitals in Waco Marlin and Temple before the dedication Open house 9 00 a m to 3 30 p m Dedication at 3 30 p m and guided tours of the new 75 000 square foot building with 400 local employees and 100 statewide Office management invites Central Texans to tour the facilities and attend the dedication.
Lt. Com. Keele assumes command of the Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Training Center on North 41st Street, succeeding Lt. Com. Roy W. Smith Jr. Keele, a 21-year Navy veteran, recently returned from nine months with Viet Nam era carrier Midway, which scored the first MIG kills. He and his family live at 1801 Royal Oaks Drive in Waco.
The Waco Hairdressers Association hosts a dance at the Old Syrian Clubhouse off Highway 84 in Woodway tonight January 22 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Admission is 2.50 per person, with proceeds going to Crippled Children’s Hospital. Gatesville attorney Robert F. Salter announces candidacy for state representative from the new 36th District embracing McLennan and Coryell counties. He has filed for the Democratic primary and plans a vigorous campaign. Salter, 32, is an attorney for Gatesville and sits on the city charter commission. He previously practiced with Byron McClellan in Gatesville since 1963 after Baylor Law School. He and his family live in Waco.
COKE MILLS Jr a 27 year old Waco lawyer filed as the first candidate for State Representative Place 1 McLennan County. A Baylor graduate he worked for W R Poage and has been active in Democratic politics serving as a delegate and Jaycee leader. He is married to Margaret Rose Schuler.
A snowy day occurred in central Texas with snowflakes beginning early Friday morning and continuing through the day.
Citizens tpan Keena Eastgate Merchants Association chose new officers. John Suter of Lewis Shoes becomes president with Jasper Emmons of Wards as vice president, Richard Green as treasurer, and Larry Guthrie as secretary. Members of the Waco Boat Dealers Association met at Elite Steak House to discuss the Heart O Texas Boat Show at Heart O Texas Coliseum March 25 and 26 from 1 to 9 p.m. Attendees included Dan Weyenberg Robinson Boat Works Dorothy Epperson Sailboat Sales Inc Frank Yowell Jr Yowell's Boat Yard Rusty Busby Busby Marine Sales Milton Solomon Outboard Sales and Serv ice Inc and Leo Bradshaw Jr Cogdell's.
Major General Lucius D. Clay Jr. assumed command of the 12th Air Force in a 9:30 ceremony at the headquarters. General Meyer will move to the Pentagon in February as a director on the chiefs of staff. Attendees included General Disosway and Col. Giannini, both former Waco officials, marking a homecoming for longtime TAC associates.
Gov. John B. Connally has proclaimed February 4 as USO Day to mark the USO's 25th anniversary. Presidents and governors nationwide issued proclamations. Connally will attend the Dallas USO anniversary dinner February 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sheraton Dallas Hotel Grand Ballroom.
