Waco projects advance with the Citizen’s Waco 66 Progress Edition set for Saturday. The piece discusses Viet Nam era military families, tax suits in Waco with high costs, and ongoing murder trial coverage including the James C. Cross case and the Candace Powers case. Dr. Wilbur A Ball was elected president of McLennan County Junior College, to assume office March 1 with a 17000 dollar annual salary. He previously served at Wharton County Junior College as vice president and dean and was Administrative Assistant to the President at Del Mar College.
The Waco City Council orders formal notification to Mayor O Dowd and Robinson to deannex extra territorial property or face court action. They award a fire station contract to Schroeder Construction for 44 289 dollars plus 2657 architect fee, plus water fittings and truck contracts.
The record notes Attorney P. M. Johnston requested a one week delay to see if Attorney Wiley Stein Jr. would appear in the matter. It states that each bill for prisoner treatment from the city jail will hereafter be determined on the merits of each individual case.
James C. Cross, a University of Texas student, received a life term in Texas prison for the murder of Susan Rigsby, potentially avoiding trial on the death of her friend Shirley Ann Stark. A later trial could bring death or a lighter sentence. The verdict followed Texas criminal code reforms allowing separate guilt and penalty hearings.
The Greater Waco Safety Council started a campaign to install a traffic signal at the Cottonbelt railway crossing in Bellmead after Mrs. Harold John Ferguson was killed and her husband critically injured when they drove into a train engine. Similar accidents have occurred at this crossing in recent years.
Mrs. Lendel Meier a clerk stenographer at Hq Twelfth Air Force received a pin Thursday at the 25th Street headquarters in recognition of twenty years of federal service Brig Gen William Dunham Deputy for Operations presented the award Meier has seven years with the Veterans Administration in Waco and thirteen years with the Air Force.
The public is invited to a free program on Food Facts and Fallacies at the Texas Power and Light Service Center 3800 Franklin in Waco at 2:00 p.m. on February 24. Speakers include Mrs Leona Allman FDA Consumer Consultant based in Dallas serving Texas and Oklahoma and Mrs Dorothy Talbot Associate Home Demonstration Agent of McLennan County with food field tips for homemakers and others interested.
Waco city council contracted with Municipal Code Corporation in Tallahassee Florida to recodify city ordinances. The proposal sets a minimum $9405 for 550 pages plus $8 per page beyond the minimum.
Central Texas awoke to heavy snow with school closures across the region. Waco and McLennan county schools halted classes except Baylor University which remained open. Roads grew slick as accidents increased and weather forecasts predicted slow melt for another day. Illnesses like colds spread statewide and spinal meningitis affected servicemen.
The twenty fifth anniversary of the USO will be observed Sunday February 27 with an open house at its headquarters 1013 Austin from 1 to 4 p.m. Waco Jaycee Wives will serve refreshments. Dr and Mrs Joel Chance who manage the local USO invite the public and civic and church groups who have helped with the USO program are especially invited.
Tom Warren filed for Place 1 on the Waco Independent School District board. He aims to succeed Vic Anderson after two terms. Election day is April 2. Warren, 33, a UT graduate and former President of the Waco Jaycees and other groups, lives at 1313 N 62nd St with his wife Jean and three children.
The final date for turning in volleyball team rosters and entry fees will be Friday February 25. Play will begin in Men's Women's and Mixed volleyball on March 1.
University of Texas Development Board appoints Carson H Hoge Waco Public Works Director as CLASP chairman for Waco. CLASP Month runs March 7 to April 7 under Governor Connally. State wide Chairman is former Governor Price Daniel. About 450 UT graduates live in Waco with many serving as CLASP volunteers.
Former Hill County attorney Steve Latham was appointed district judge by Governor John Connally to fill the vacancy caused by Sam Johnson’s resignation, serving the remainder of 1966.
U S Senator John Tower told the Waco Jaycees that Red China aims at Vietnam and Formosa but fears U S power. He said U S jets could destroy China's nuclear plants and industry if needed, and China lacks enough troops to turn the South Vietnam war.
Burglars continued to operate in and around Waco with recent burglaries at Johnnie's Shoe Service 720 Austin and private homes reported to police. Boyd's Humble at 1025 North Valley Mills Drive lost 100 dollars from the safe while in operation.
The civilian labor force in McLennan County fell by 356 to about 58,706 in mid January with nonagricultural employment down 830 mainly from retail layoffs. Unemployment rose, estimated at 2,775 or 4.7 percent, up from 4.0 percent in December and 4.8 percent a year ago.
The Texas Legislature passed a voter registration law proposed by Governor John Connally to supplement the poll tax list. Its future use awaits a U.S. Supreme Court decision, while Austin has circulated materials explaining how to obtain the legal voter list.
Bend Carpenter was elected to the Texas Power and Light Company board. TP and L president W. W. Lynch announced the appointment. Carpenter, a Dallas business leader, serves as president of the Trinity Improvement Association and of several cattle firms. He also chairs Southland Life Insurance and sits on boards including Kroger and Republic National Bank of Dallas.
Tyler county launches its 1966 tourist drive led by Clyde E. Gray, chairman of the Tyler Tourist Development Commission. Some 176,000 colorful brochures, financed by local business leaders, are printed and ready for distribution to boost Texas fastest growing industry.
