Clarence Barnes age 35 was charged with assault with intent to murder after police arrested him Saturday night. Barnes told Detective Scho ber he shot Otho Smiley in self defense after Smiley threatened him with a knife during an argument at the Diamond Inn. Smiley is hospitalized with a stomach wound. if he dies the charge could become murder. Barnes claimed he borrowed a dollar, won $32 in a craps game, and took $25 to obtain his pistol.
Barnes says Smiley threatened him again at the Famous Door tavern and tried to crowd him in his car. Ruby Lee Talbert drove Smiley away with a meat cleaver after spotting the knife he held. The weapon had been stolen from Talbert’s husband two weeks earlier.
William Rye paid a fine of thirty five dollars for a minor offense but was assessed two hundred fifty dollars and is paying at three dollars per day. The city pays the county a daily room and board fee of one dollar fifty cents.
