At about 3 30 am Saturday Bobby George McDaniel 22 fought a Waco officer and was booked on a drunk charge after a confrontation. He refused fingerprinting and was bloodied. Bond set at 15 dollars. Attorney Martin Eichelberger entered not guilty plea. Trial moved from December 16 to August 12 with jury called. Chief Gunterman ordered officers to arrest known thieves on sight. Five youths were jailed with McDaniel. others released. Police sought additional juvenile suspects linked to recent thefts and assaults.
Frank Johnson described by police as a dangerous Negro man was booked on an aggravated assault charge after a confrontation with two Waco policemen. He is listed as resident of 1720 Short Street with a five page criminal record and is a patient at the Veterans Hospital. Officers Crocker and Good reported the arrest followed excessive force claim and a trial visit.
Waco is slated to be a hub of air service with 14 daily flights in four directions. Exhibits filed with the Chamber of Commerce by the Civil Aeronautics Board advance the plan as part of the Southwestern Area Local Service Airline case set for hearings on September 27. Trans-Texas is named as the logical local service carrier for Waco.
County commissioners refused to delay the three million dollar road bond vote. A Citizens committee led by Jack Kultgen asked for postponement at the urging of the Waco Chamber of Commerce highways committee. They cited ongoing highway construction planning and tax concerns as reasons, noting the recent city tax hike may affect the outcome. The election remains three weeks away as scheduled.
Sunday turnout in Waen for Dollar Day proved a top annual event, DWU secretary Carol Whitcraft said, showing merchants can improve promos by working together. The occasion also featured the semi annual white goods sale.
Shoppers flocked to downtown stores for a successful dollar day with coupons and big bargains. The Citizen reports 75 workers produced over 50,000 copies during peak periods, expanding from an initial 25,000 to cover Bellmead and nearby areas as distribution surged. Team members worked around the clock, delivering a wide spread of editions.
The November 8 1960 ballot will include four proposed constitutional amendments. Amendment one would authorize a Hospital District for Lamar Hidalgo and part of Comanche County. Amendment two raises the Veterans Land Board bond interest cap to 3.5 percent. Amendment three sets legislative pay at 4800 annually plus a 12.90 per diem for limited days. Amendment four allows classification and licensing of lenders and sets interest rules.
Trustees received a record high budget for the school system totaling 6 009 640 dollars for 1960 41. The board is expected to approve next month with little change, financed by a 1.55 tax rate. The rate is 15 cents per 100 valuation lower than 1959 60, yet more money will be raised due to district valuations rising from 173 million to 204 million and natural growth.
