J M Bright condemns the municipal animal shelter as cruel and misnamed, urging city action. La Vega Independent School District schedules a $350 000 bond election on Saturday May 14 with no guaranteed tax increase per Supt Henry Cranfill. Funds would add 12 classrooms at Dripping Springs Elementary and La Vega Intermediate, plus a new gym at La Vega High. Polls run 7 am to 7 pm at the district office. Absentee voting offered at the same site until four days before election.
Charles Long pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and was sentenced to six months in the county jail after a January attack on a Baylor co ed. Two shoplifting cases against Ocie Pearson yielded sixty days in jail plus costs. Ongoing cases include Fred Toone facing multiple charges as deputies pursue burglary and forgery allegations linked to prior felonies and bonds posted by the Zachry family.
About 500 people gathered at Karem Shrine temple for Frank B. McGregor’s bid for state representative in the Democratic primary on May 7. Speakers described his record as independent with a liberal to conservative platform and urged focus on tax policy and state spending.
Loyalty Day will be observed Sunday May 1 at 2 30 p m at Lions Park in a program sponsored by Post 2148 Veterans of Foreign Wars with the 12th Air Force headquarters and other groups. Col Marion F Caruthers will take part and colors will be presented. Mayor Johnston and Judge Derwood Johnson will speak, with Judge Vic Hall as master.
The oldest daughter of Baylor coach John Bridgers and Mrs. Bridgers, Cynthia Ann Bridgers, 22, was laid to rest at Waco Memorial Park Cemetery after services at Seventh and James Baptist Church. Dr. Riley Eubanks officiated. She died at a local hospital following surgery complications. Survived by husband, three daughters, two brothers Dixon and Don Bridgers, and her parents.
Twelve or more Salvation Army graduates will arrive in Waco before noon Saturday April 30 from across Texas. They will meet Colonel Paul Thronburg and Major Mrs. Orville Salmon as Youth Secretaries for Texas. The group prepares to enter the Salvation Army Officer Training School and will take a Baylor University test supervised by Dr. Joseph W. West grading the exams.
