Record shows Waco and two other Texas cities reached an all time high in bank deposits as of April 5. Banks reported gross deposits for Waco exceeding 200 million dollars, a peak unusual for the typically year end rush.
Local council weighs adding patrol cars and overtime after crime surge. Captain Reed says solo cars caught more burglars, while officials fear PAS system reverse. Citizens urge better police visibility and efficiency amid calls for stricter enforcement and budget savings.
Waco offers a 1966 pilgrimage at the Suspension Bridge toll house with a centennial Texas medallion sale and brochure. Exhibit items include jewelry firearms local history books and restored upstairs tower room. Also featured are St Pauls Episcopal Church 515 Columbus Ave Penelope and the Barnes home 3217 Robin Rd with 18th century furnishings and Greek Revival style. BOX LUNCHES REFRESHMENTS.
The sixth annual Pilgrimage to Historical Waco on April 23-24 opens 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Cameron Park East Terrace and other locations. Tour tickets are 2.50 for adults with 0.10 for children. Proceeds from historic medallions benefitting the Pilgrimage of Old Homes Committee.
Central Texas Lions District 2X3 convention unfolds at the Alice Center in Waco with expected crowds over 500 from 52 clubs. Ike Carroll seeks district governor, Herbert Barsh named director candidate, and a Lions queen contest is set for Saturday at 3 PM with tickets available at the registration desk.
Ray H Horton retired Humble Oil executive was chosen president of the East Texas Chamber of Commerce at its 40th annual meeting in Longview. He is the fortieth Texan to serve since 1926. Horton, born 1907 in Denison and a 1930 University of Oklahoma geology graduate, chairs the Texas Industrial Commission.
Potentate Pill R. Baggett announced a trio of events this week. A regular stated meeting took place in the Lodge room on Thursday April 21 at 8 p.m. A Ladies Party is set for Ridgewood Country Club from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a Shrine Ceremonial will run at Karem Temple from 4 to 9:15 p.m. Saturday April 23. Attendees include over three hundred Shrine wives and about five hundred Shriners.
The March term grand jury recessed after 25 indictments for cattle theft and shoplifting, plus other law violations. Juanita Johnson was no billed in the Wydermeyer killing matter. D A Don Hall and Jim Brock presented cases to the jury. Judge Vic Hall will handle uncontested district court cases next days. jurors ask to return next Tuesday. Gearship Plymouth contest May 14 at State Fair tests student repair teams, Dallas winners advance nationally.
Emmett L. Yant was elected by the Waco School Board to serve as president. Vice president is Mrs. M. M. Mac Rae with Jim Ed Crews as secretary. Gordon Rountree begins a second six year term, John Faulkner elected to a six year term and sworn in by Crews. The board approved a boundary change between Hillcrest and Mountainview zones and restricted Mountainview transfers to siblings of affected students.
