The Albany Daily Advertiser begins a series of authentic sketches of principal figures in the French service. General Gerard, a count and renowned officer, served under Bernadotte and rose through campaigns at Utrecht and Wagram. He led Saxon cavalry, fought in the Russian campaign, and earned general officer rank after Montereau. He captured 5,000 Austrians at Montereau in 1814 and later held missions under Louis XVIII. He commanded at Ligny, faced Blucher, and suffered a severe wound. After Napoleon’s fall he returned to service for the Hundred Days, took Ligny, and fought with Grouchy. Since then he has not held public office until now, and is predicted to rise to distinction, proving capable and steadfast in this era.
