A Kentucky native and U S Ranger named Thomas Higgins, living near Vandalia, earned lasting fame for heroism during a 1514 frontier ambush. With bullets in his thigh and skull wounds, he fought off seventy to eighty Indians, saved a wounded comrade Burgess, and was rescued by nearby garrison Rangers led by Mrs Pursely, who urged a rescue ride. Higgins later recovered, paying a physician’s bill with a razor and self-treatment, and became a renowned hunter while the community praised his steadfast courage.
