Effects Of The Great Land Room Last Year
The 1919 land boom outpaced all prior increases since 1850 to 1906 but expert opinion says it harmed farmers and the nation. Two thirds of profits went to city speculators as prices rose with high food costs. Labor peak not yet reached, tenants averaged only 12 percent of farm value in 60 counties. Speculation may help sellers but diverts capital from production, reduces farming output, and pushes buyers to cheap, untouched regions.
