Iowa farmers optimistic about bumper corn crop outlook
Des Moines takings report notes more than 80 percent of Iowa's potential bumper corn crop safe from frost. Crop reporter Charles D. Reed says despite heat and drought harming late corn on about a quarter of acreage, the bulk is matured and likely unaffected. Government Sept 1 estimate puts state yield at 49.5 bushels, with moisture deficits and a need for soil moisture in the top three feet. Some corn could dry enough to crib by month’s end, and some grain was swapped for feed this week.
