Early History of Emmet County Chronicle
Pre 1860 lakes were barren for fish until spring floods drove fish to new streams. Eagles Lake yielded uniform-sized catch year after year and hunting birds followed. A 1680 Cupid tale and a 1800 marriage mark the era’s social notes. The 1862 Emmet county district court records quote a mere formal notice, while swamp lands delayed courthouse construction and a grand 1860 public dance and supper enlivened Estherville society.
