R R Hudson recounts Wisconsin settlers arriving in fall 1845 and building a fort at Center Chain after Indian raids. Narrative covers 1862 distress, the Minnesota outbreak, local arrivals around Tawa Lake, clashes with Native Americans, and the bravery of settlers including Britt and Clendenning. Includes reminiscences of nearby towns, residents, and a later note on Red Gauntlet Lodge activities and a residence crime reward.

Robber Shot At Fonda in Brutal Bank Raid
Fonda, a town of about 1,200 in Pocahontas county, faced a gun battle after three cracksmen raided the Fonda Creamery, blew the safe, took 38, and fled as a posse pursued. One bandit was fatally shot, a second gravely wounded, and the third vanished as residents reported a brisk fusillade and a hunt for the gang. A wounded robber refused to identify himself while doctors warned he would not live. Police recovered the stolen money near the wounded man and the groceries stolen from Sargent’s store.
