Danger Of Too High Land Prices in Iowa Fields

Iowa State College economist W G Murray flags risk from rising land values in northern central and eastern Iowa. Despite high farm income and low mortgage rates, limited sale of farms by insurers and federal banks boosts prices, especially where inventories are tight. The report notes 50 000 acres sold by Federal Land Bank Omaha and Farm Mortgage Corp this year, with an average price around 91 per acre.

Salt treatment fights poultry cannibalism says expert

M A Balkema reports that adding 2 to 4 percent salt to poultry feed can curb feather-picking and cannibalism. The salt method, tested by the USDA and state stations, may involve sprinkling salt on mash or mixing with mash, with results often seen within days. If needed, trimming beaks is mentioned, but salt is described as a curative, not preventive, with a treatment lasting 2 weeks to 5 or 6 months and repeatable if the vice recurs.
