Imperialism and militarism drive colonial expansion and crises

The passage links growth of commercial policies with imperialism and militarism, arguing colonies are both method and end. It cites 1884–1890 Berlin Conference attempts, later conferences, and crises from Fashoda to Agadir as consequences of colonial competition, highlighting Germany’s 1890s scramble and eventual pushback by civilized powers.
