Truth About the Railroads Wage vs. Rates Debate
Economist Dr. Frank J. Warne challenged railroad claims that wage hikes drive freight and passenger rates. He testified that rate increases from 1914 to 1921 far outpaced wage gains, and that railroads cut payrolls after wartime controls without lowering rates. He exposed inflated profits, inflated supply costs, and insider deals, arguing wasteful practices kept rates high despite wage reductions.
