Long Time Trend Toward Intensive Dairying Slows in Iowa
Ames Iowa May 14 Iowa's long time shift to intensive dairying has paused with the 1934 downturn and signs point to possible broader beef production. Agricultural economist Albert Mighell notes that the state could maintain dairy output but cattle numbers may rise, potentially curbing corn and hog sectors while dairy remains sizable. About 36 percent of Iowa cattle are milk cows, with 18 percent as younger cattle, calves and bulls, totaling just over half needed to sustain dairy production. in 1929 most cows were dual purpose or beef and dairying had been rising since 1900. There were 12 percent more cattle on Iowa farms in 1934 than 1930, but production per cow fell 6 percent since 1929.
